Introduction

Events are vital, yet many fail. Research at IMEX 2023 explored why. The Event Design Collective identified four key pillars of event failure.

• Lack of Vision: Events need a clear purpose and desired outcomes. Without a vision, events lack direction and engagement. Organizers must define aims for each stakeholder to guide planning and execution.
• Lack of Dialogue: Communication is key. Poor dialogue between event owners and teams leads to misunderstandings and misaligned priorities. Transparent narratives and processes are crucial.
• Lack of Empathy: Understanding stakeholders' needs and expectations is vital. Events lacking empathy may overlook accessibility, concerns, or cultural sensitivities. Empathetic design leads to inclusive experiences.
• Lack of Perspective: Narrow perspectives hinder success. Organizers must consider broader contexts and gather insights from various sources. This ensures relevance and adaptability.

Solutions

Proactive event design is crucial. Incorporating vision, dialogue, empathy, and perspective into planning mitigates challenges. Success relies on thoughtful design, detailed execution, and continuous adaptation.
