Poland is making significant strides in sustainable tourism in this part of Europe, with four of its cities - Kraków, Gdańsk, Wrocław, and Szczecin - actively participating in the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Index). Each of these Polish cities brings unique initiatives and achievements to the table, reflecting a collective commitment to responsible and regenerative tourism.
Their alignment with global sustainability standards is transforming how Poland positions itself on the international stage, not just as a host, but as a forward-thinking partner for green meetings and regenerative tourism. Whether you're a PCO, DMC, venue manager, or corporate planner, these cities offer compelling case studies in sustainable destination management.
Kraków holds the distinction of being the first Polish city to join the GDS-Index in 2023. The city's Sustainable Tourism Policy for 2021–2028 emphasizes building harmony through participation and partnership.
Initiatives like the "Zeroemisyjny Kraków" project aim to transition the city towards climate neutrality, while the Kraków Development Strategy 2030 addresses various social and environmental factors to create a more lifestyle-friendly city.
In the 2024 GDS-Index report, Kraków improved its ranking by eight places, now standing at 72nd globally. The city received commendations for its destination management strategies and community-focused programs such as the Civic Budget and the City Helpers campaign.

Gdańsk became the second Polish city to join the GDS-Index, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable development. The city has been nominated for the Most Improved Destination Award in the 2024 GDS-Awards, highlighting its significant year-over-year progress in sustainable destination management. Gdańsk's efforts include integrating green practices into its tourism and event sectors, aligning with global sustainability standards.
The city's convention bureau has been instrumental in promoting sustainable practices within the MICE industry. By hosting events like the Velocity 2025 Conference, the annual "Trends In Tourism" conference, and the “Regenerating Polish Destinations: Sustainable Tourism in Action” workshop Gdańsk has provided a platform for industry professionals to discuss and implement sustainable event strategies. The city's focus on sustainability has not only enhanced its reputation but also attracted international conferences and events, contributing to its economic growth.
